I’ve been doing a lot of cloud watching lately. They’re always there, and always moving and changing – important to remember.
Alfred Stieglitz (1864 – 1946) was an American art promoter and husband to painter Georgia O’Keefe. He was also an excellent photographer and once spent a year photographing clouds (short video here). The idea behind his project was to show how his photographs were not connected to subject matter but were “equivalents” to his inner state or feelings about the subject. Clouds can be a metaphor for passing thoughts and feelings.
I’ve been noticing them more lately because of an Instagram account called “cloudreporter,” where anyone can submit a photograph via email and they’ll post it. I’ve always been a skywatcher but a series of recent road trips has me paying even closer attention. I’ve been amazed and awed by the many different types of clouds and how they’re constantly changing. Here are a few that I’ve particularly liked.
Thanks for reminding me to look up and appreciate the clouds again. Lovely cloud pictures!
I’m an avid cloud watcher/photographer who appreciates you having introduced me to cloud reporter…another lovely place to share the beauty of clouds.
What a wonderful coincidence! I have been reading about Stieglitz for a while now and had uncovered his cloud series and all the reasons as to what motivated him to make this series. This work heavily influenced my making of my upcoming series – rhythms from the sky – that I’ve taken from the rooftop of my Arizona home. I was fascinated with seeing these images in black and white…something I would’ve never considered..so his work definitely swayed me towards using black and white versus color. Thanks for a wonderful post and sharing with your audience!
