Oregon in the United States is my favourite state to visit. I always feel at home when I’m there. Besides that, it has many other things going for it.
- It’s very green (because it rains a lot).
- It has Portland (one of the most unique cities ever).
- It’s home to some of the best Pinot Noir (and other wines) in the world.
- And, it’s on the ocean.
The image here is one of Oregon’s most popular tourist destinations – Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach. It’s a sight to see all by itself, rising 235 feet into the air. Yet, it’s also home to amazing tide pools (and the creatures that inhabit them) as well as hundreds of nesting seabirds.
There are many wonderful images of Haystack Rock. With this image, taken on May 19, 2011, I wanted to present a different view of the rock, focusing on the lines in the sand leading the way.
Where is your favourite place to visit?
Beautiful – I love these squiggly sand lines leading us on a journey to the Haystack. The people in the distance add a wonderful sense of scale. For me, my favorite places would be the big cities that I have visited – NYC, Chicago, Toronto, Washington DC – architectural wonders!
Ah yes, I love all those places too, and am not surprised that you do as well.
Hi Kim! Thank you for sharing your images. I’ve often thought Oregon would be a great place to live. For now New Orleans will have to do. BTW Bethany Spring was sold and will still continue to offer sacred space for retreats. Sister Kelly
Hello Kelly! Yes, Rick from Bethany Spring contacted me. What are you doing in New Orleans?
What a beautiful composition this is.
My favorite place(s) to visit, would most definitely depend on what I was in the mood for.
NYC would probably be my first choice, since I just love it there.
If I wanted something more serene, it would be the coastline of Maine.
I love NYC too and am hoping to spend time in Maine soon.
I also enjoy the Oregon coast and go there every year. But I also live in another beautiful area—the Palouse region of eastern Washington state. Stop here some time as you are heading to Oregon.
Patricia, I visited the Palouse last May (see image above for my Keeping It Simple workshop). It was on my bucket list and I’ve never experienced such a connection to place as I did there. There are no words to describe it – one of my favourite “places” ever. Now, I want to go back and experience it in the fall.
One of my favorite places to visit is Jupiter, Florida. We are staying there right now and I just did one of your online exercises. I took 36 images of one palm tree. You are right it is amazing what you see after you get past your first dozen or so photos.
Oregon looks like a neat place to visit. I would love to go there to photograph lighthouses on the coast.
Hi Marybeth! Nice to see you here. I’d love to see what you came up with for your palm tree.
What a beautiful photo of Haystack Rock, I like that you took it in the vertical position with all those leading lines in the sand. Oregon sounds a wonderful place to visit, I’ve never been. I have lots of favourite places I like to visit: the pre-Alps in Switzerland, the beautiful lakes here too. I also adore London for the atmosphere, Cornwall in England for the sea which I miss where I live now!
I love the your POV and those lines in the sand that lead me to the rock! Beautifully composed! My favorite place would be anywhere there’s moving water, in particular along the Arkansas River.
Oregon is one of my favorite places, too, and for the same reasons. But my favorite place is probably “the lake” in northern Wisconsin. It brings me in touch with nature on some different level and provides a sense of peace and serenity. Maybe it’s because of my history there ~~~ a lot of my growing up was there. It’s a feeling of home.
