I’m away on vacation this week and this is a re-post of an article I wrote in 2011.
I took this image in March of 2007 at Eagle Creek Park near my home in Indianapolis. At the time, I was working on my Masters degree in environmental issues. For one class, we had to go to the same place at least once a week for a whole semester, sit for twenty minutes and write about what we saw. How contemplative!
By the end of that semester, that place had become very special to me. I became familiar with the whole ecosystem of living things that made this place their home. This image remains a personal favourite from that time. It was one of the first abstractions I ever photographed. I love the blending of colours and the message it sends to me.
We are all reflected in each other.
Our thoughts mirror ourselves.
We are connected and interdependent.
Contemplative photography does not need exotic locations, special filters or tricks, or the best photographic equipment. This type of image is available to us every single day, but only if we’re open to seeing it.
What a beautiful and calming image, Kim. Enjoy your vacation and come back refreshed and renewed.
What a wondrous abstract reflection study. Enjoy your vacation!
Your vacation walks on the beach sound wonderful, and they brought back many memories.
I was raised in southern California, and every weekend, yep every one, we would spend at the beach. I loved the soft sand against my bare feet, loved the waves lapping at the sand every ten seconds or so, loved the salty smell of the air. So simple, so divine. That was over sixty years ago, and over 1,500 miles away, yet as I typed the words, I swear I could smell that sweet musty odor of the ocean.
I am looking forward to your “simple” workshop
Simple and divine is right. Thanks for your comment, Len.
I can see why this is a favorite. There is something about it that is beyond words. So thankful for all of the photos you share.
That means a lot to me that you can see that, Elese. Plus, Eagle Creek Park is probably near and dear to your heart too.
