This week in my Photo By Design workshop, we’re exploring perspective.
One photographic exercise for this topic is to take at least 24 shots of one subject from all different angles. I’ve done this many, many times and it’s always enlightening as well as good practice.
Another way to approach this exercise is to photograph a subject over time, in all seasons, situations, and weather.
In preparation for the 2012 Superbowl in Indianapolis, Marriott built a new hotel complex downtown. Since moving away, I don’t get to see it as often, but I find that whenever I’m there, I’m drawn to photograph this building as many ways as I can. It’s reflective blue surface never looks the same.
When looking at the different perspectives together, I saw just how many different ways you could look at the same thing. Of course, the application of this exercise is that we need to be able to see new possibilities and perspectives in everything – even the familiar people and situations in our lives.
Do you have a subject that you go back to again and again?

Boredom, The Edge of Creativity
This is a great lesson. The Football Hall of Fame and the Akron Art Museum are two of my local favorites – both are exciting architectural wonders that have offered me much in the way of inspiration over the years. I have shot each of them many, many times and never tire of finding new ways to portray their beauty.
Beautiful image! I love the blue; my favorite color! I have a couple of parks that I love to return to during the different seasons. It’s the same, yet ever changing!
Kim, I love this capture of the Marriott. It is truly simplistic, yet majestic! Surrounded by clouds gives an interesting feel. It is my favorite building in downtown as well. I plan to photograph it again in spring, summer and fall, from the canal as I’ve done the past few winters with snow.
